Good morning. A quiet Monday opens one of the busiest earnings weeks of the year: Alphabet, Tesla, and Intel all report in the days ahead. The backdrop is tense, with the market coming off a rough week and fresh weekend news out of the Middle East.
The Market Gauge
Here is where the market finished on Friday, closing out the week:
S&P 500: 7,457.69, down 1.01%
Nasdaq: 25,520.24, down 1.40%
Dow: 52,146.42, down 0.77%
What drove it: A tough week, with the damage concentrated in chip and AI hardware stocks. Per Investor's Business Daily, the S&P 500 finished the week slightly below its 50-day moving average and the Nasdaq slipped below its recent lows. Over the weekend, tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalated further, and oil prices, which had already surged last week, stay in focus.
Beginner note: IBD's read right now is caution. When the major indexes are drifting sideways and testing support rather than pushing to new highs, the odds do not favor aggressive buying. This is a build-your-watchlist phase, not a back-up-the-truck phase. For us that is easy, because we are not buying anything yet. But the discipline it teaches, waiting for the market to hand you a clear signal instead of forcing a trade, is the same one you will use for years.
On today's calendar
Monday is the calm before a very busy week:
A light day to start: there is no major economic release scheduled, and the marquee earnings land midweek. The one notable report today is Steel Dynamics, a large U.S. steelmaker, after the close.
The week ahead is loaded: Alphabet (Google's parent) and Tesla both report after Wednesday's close, GE Vernova and CSX report Wednesday morning, and Intel reports Thursday. A wave of transports, telecoms, and defense names fills in the rest. How these reports land, especially what they say about spending on artificial intelligence, will likely set the market's tone into month-end.
On the radar: Snowflake
$SNOW ( ▲ 2.02% ) is a good one to watch precisely because the market is uncertain. Snowflake sells cloud software that lets companies store and analyze huge amounts of data in one place, and it is increasingly tied to the AI buildout. On a week when chip stocks were hit hard, it held up: it closed Friday at $268.90, down less than half a percent, and sits only about 6% below its 52-week high.
How it has been acting: Snowflake's 52-week range runs from $118.30 to $284.99, so at $268.90 it is near the top of its range while much of technology sold off. Per IBD, it is setting up, working on what could be its first real breakout attempt since October. It has not broken out yet. It is a $93 billion company that is forming a base while the headlines are elsewhere.
Why it is worth watching: This is exactly what building a watchlist looks like. You are not buying Snowflake today, and neither are we. You are noting that a strong company is tightening up into a possible setup, and you are deciding in advance what would make it interesting, a clean move above its recent highs on heavy volume. Tonight's lesson begins our chart-reading week, where we start learning to read setups like this one for yourself. A stock holding near its highs while the market wobbles is the kind of relative strength worth tracking.
